The following image shows an example of a user browsing the collection using Google Earth.  The main Google Earth features that are useful for browsing the collection are:

  • Folder Organization
The LANDSAT images are grouped in folders by year in the Places selection box (on the left side of the image).  Users can set the visibility of the images individually or by year by toggling the checkbox to the left of the folder or individual dataset .  In the figure below, images from the years 2005, 2006, and 2007 are selected to be displayed in the browser.  However, not all images are displayed, because of the settings of the time slider.
  • Time Slider
The time slider, located at the top of the image, is used to control which images are visible.  In the figure below, the time slider is set to display images in the interval June 3, 2006 to April 14, 2007.  The interval can be changed by clicking and dragging the endpoints of the slider.
  • Link to Downloadable Datasets
Clicking on the icon in the center of an image (or by clicking on an image name in the Places box) cause an information window to appear.  The information window contains links that allow a user to download the datasets in two formats (individual band GeoTIFFs or a 4-band composite GeoTIFF).
